What should an advocate’s CV and an attorney-at-law’s CV look like?

Your resume must include mandatory sections such as: personal details, professional summary, experience, skills, education, and GDPR clause. You can further expand your lawyer CV with achievements, completed training and courses, references or interests.

CV attorney-at-law and CV attorney – how to distinguish experience?

If you want to get your dream job, your CV must be convincing, i.e. showing the effectiveness of your actions – describing your achievements is a great way to do this! In the professional experience section of your lawyer’s resume , you can mention awards, publications, and results.

CV lawyer – example of achievements:

“I put in place effective procedures to protect personal data at the corporate client, which allowed the company to comply with the GDPR and avoid potential fines.”

Attorney-at-law CV

What skills should I list in a lawyer’s CV?

All employers are looking for candidates who meet their requirements – you can find a list of expectations in a specific job offer. Match your lawyer resume with the advertisement, instead of sending the same document to all companies, this will increase your chances of being invited to an interview.

Tailor your lawyer resume to the needs of the law firm you are applying to, for this you can divide the skills section into “legal specializations” and “skills”.

What to keep in mind when writing a lawyer’s CV in English?

  1. Add references that matter a lot in countries such as the US and the UK.
  2. In some countries (e.g. the United States and the United Kingdom), a photo is not included in a CV due to anti-discrimination laws.
  3. Write a summary in your CV, i.e. “Summary”, it is a few sentences in which you discuss key issues of interest to the employer, in a Polish CV a summary is also welcome. Answer the following questions:
  • Who are you? for example. “I am a lawyer with 3 years of experience.”
  • What do you do and what competences do you have? for example. “I specialise in labour law and personal data protection, I have practical knowledge in handling cases related to contracts, labour disputes and GDPR compliance.”
  • What do you strive for at work? for example. “My professional goal is to further develop my specialization in mediation and the drafting of employment contracts in international organizational structures.”

Lawyer cover letter – how to distinguish it?

Do you want to create a cover letter? Take care of professionalism and stand out from other candidates. Highlight your unique experiences, e.g. participation in prestigious cases, internships in a reputable law firm or knowledge of specific areas of law. Use specifics, e.g. “I have represented clients in 15 family law cases”, this sounds better than the generic “I have experience in civil law”.

A lawyer’s position in a company can include different areas of responsibility, so you should pay attention to matching the letter with the requirements from the job offer. If your employer values fluency in English, point out examples where you have used it, e.g. “I have drawn up international agreements”. Finally, add a personal touch, such as a passion for solving complex legal issues, which will make you the perfect candidate.
